Free Granola Alternative for Mac
Choose Loofah if your priority is free on-device transcription and a vault of files you control. Granola combines meeting notes with hosted AI and collaboration. Both let you take notes while capturing the conversation; the main differences are where processing happens and how you use the results.

When Loofah fits
Section titled “When Loofah fits”You want to transcribe offline, keep a local recording indefinitely, and use the same notes outside a hosted workspace. Loofah saves transcripts as JSON; export a session when you want a Markdown document containing the transcript too.
You also take responsibility for local setup and backups. Download a speech model, select your languages, and choose a separate AI provider if you want summaries. Hosted providers and connected agents can receive the content you send them; read the privacy boundary.
When Granola fits
Section titled “When Granola fits”Granola may suit you better if shared folders, built-in cross-meeting AI chat, mobile access, or hosted team integrations matter more than running transcription locally. Check its current plans for the collaboration and administrative features your team needs. [1][3]
MCP access is available in both products. The useful question is whether you want your agent to retrieve a local vault or work with a hosted service.
Bring a recording, not an account
Section titled “Bring a recording, not an account”Loofah has no dedicated Granola account migration. Granola says it does not retain meeting audio after transcription, so do not assume you can retrieve an old recording from it. [2] If you already have a separate audio file or a compatible SRT/VTT transcript, import it into Loofah. Sharing permissions and folders do not transfer through that import.
